Zamtel Launches E-Sim to Boost Connectivity and Digital Economy in Zambia

Zamtel, a telecoms firm, has introduced an electronic sim card (e-sim) to enhance phone and internet connectivity across Zambia.

The innovative e-sim targets both locals and tourists, offering an easy-to-use solution for those with compatible devices.

According to Zamtel Chief Executive Officer Jason Mwanza, the e-sim card is a virtual equivalent of a physical card, providing the same functionality.

Mwanza says it is ideal for frequent travellers, as it is easy to activate and use.

Speaking at the launch, Zamtel Chief Technical Officer Mwiya Wamunyima read a speech on behalf of Mwanza, highlighting Zamtel’s commitment to technological advancements and improved customer services.

Technology and Science Permanent Secretary Dr Brilliant Habeenzu praised the launch, stating that the e-sim card will enhance connectivity, promote the digital economy, and increase smartphone penetration in Zambia, currently at just over 50%.

Dr. Habeenzu notes that Zambia joins major economies in adopting digital SIM cards, a technology already embraced by several African countries.

He adds that the launch demonstrates Zamtel’s market leadership and dedication to innovation, providing customers with better services and experiences.
