DEC Cracks Down on Drug Trafficking Across Zambia

The Drug Enforcement Commission says it has made significant progress in combating drug trafficking and cultivation across provinces.

Its recent operations have led to the apprehension of individuals involved in illegal drug activities and the seizure of large quantities of drugs, marking a victory in the fight against drug-related crimes.

DEC Public Relations Officer Theresa Mawere says in Muchinga Province, Kaluku Musanshi was arrested for unlawfully cultivating 850 kilograms of fresh green cannabis plants, following a tipoff from the public.

Mawere says Mwashilindi Leonard Muchemwa was also arrested for trafficking in 1.2 kilograms of dry loose cannabis and cultivating 5 kilograms of fresh green cannabis plants in Chinsali District.

In Northern Province, Mporokoso District, she says three notorious drug suppliers were apprehended, leading to the seizure of 67 kilograms of dry loose cannabis and 11.2 kilograms of fresh cannabis plants.

The suspects included Peter Mwaba, Julius Chongo, and Kelvin Musonda.

Mawere further says in Western Province, three suspects were apprehended for drug offences, including Chimbali Mubanga, Kamwengo Siyape, and Kebby Akatwala, for various drug-related activities in different districts.

In Livingstone, she states that a notorious drug supplier known as “T-bag,” Steven Musasakwa, was arrested for perpetuating the illicit drug trade.

Mawere explains that he was found with a substantial quantity of loose cannabis and was allegedly recruiting juveniles to sell drugs on his behalf.

She says DEC remains committed to upholding the rule of law and protecting communities from the dangers of illicit drug cultivation, production, trafficking, and abuse.
