The Millers Association of Zambia has appealed to the government to provide incentives to millers, to allow them to invest in alternative sources of power following the upcoming load shedding.
ZESCO has announced the commencement of load shedding effective Monday, 11th March 2024, as one of the mitigation measures to address the power deficit caused by low water levels in the main storage reservoirs on the Zambezi and Kafue River Basins.
Reacting to this development, MAZ President Andrew Chintala says the load shedding will force the millers to invest in a backup power supply to ensure stable production, hence the appeal for the government to assist millers.
He has urged millers who have not invested in alternative sources of power in the past to do so to ensure there is no disruption in the production process.
